Using an ice cream maker makes the whole chilling process a lot easier. I use the Cuisinart ICE-21 shown here. This maker
has a capacity of 1.5 quarts and the mixer is stationary while the bowl rotates. The opening is a bit small and you may get
some of the mixture on the rim during the pouring process if you are not careful but when you consider that clean up is a
part of any activity in the kitchen, this is minor.
You can use a variety of containers for storing your ice cream including reusing a plastic tub from one of your previous
ice cream purchases. I prefer the Tovolo rectangular container at right. It holds 1.5 quarts which is perfect for the amounts
made by most recipes. This tub has rounded bottoms which makes it easier when using an ice cream scoop (typically a 1.5 inch
scoop). The lid stays on well but comes off easily when you need access.
I have two of these just in case I come up with a recipe I can't wait to try before I finish the last one. I always keep one in
the freezer chilling, along with the ice cream bowl to the mixer above, that way everything is ready to go when those spur of
the moment ice cream making urges hit.
